YELLOWKNIFE ELKS LODGE
About US
The Yellowknife Elks Lodge is an organization dedicated to the betterment of our community through charitable endeavors. Through the volunteer efforts of our members, the Elks generate funds to help with local and national programs. Our charitable and community involvement is widespread, and currently includes sponsorship of Yellowknife Air Cadets #815 (since 1972), and supporting the Elks Hearing Center at Stanton Territorial Hospital.
The Lodge meets twice a month – every first and third Monday – with a break over July and August.
Membership is open to all men and women over the age of 18. See the Membership section for more information, including how to become a member.
MISSION STATEMENT & VISION
The Elks of Canada is a national, fraternal, and charitable organization promoting and serving community needs through local lodge volunteers. Its vision is to be the most progressive family focused organization in Canada, meeting community and member needs and expectations.
History of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge
The Yellowknife chapter of the Elks was opened in 1948 with 63 members. At its peak in the early 1970s, Elks membership soared to about 425.
The building’s upstairs has played host to the legislature and the NWT Supreme Court. Community groups still book events six or seven days each week.
The Elks Hall, the upper level of the Elks building, was built in 1959, and has served as the legislature and Supreme Court of the NWT.
On May 16, 1966, Yellowknife’s hospital burned down. Quick active members ensured patients would have a temporary hospital in the Elks Hall.
