Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

 

The Yellowknife Elks Scholarship Program is a combination of three historical scholarship funds and a new program aimed at supporting those in trades education.

The historical funds include:

  • The Smitty Muyres Memorial Fund for students attending a Canadian university or accredited college.
  • The Marion Slaven Scholarship for students pursuing careers in nursing or the medical profession.
  • The Hettrick Aviation Scholarship for students pursuing careers in the aviation profession.

 

PROGRAM SCOPE

This scholarship program is designed to encourage and support students with strong scholastic backgrounds and leadership qualities who are going to attend, or are currently attending, a Canadian university, accredited college, technical school, institute of technology, accredited trades program or accredited flight school.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, the Elks Scholarship Fund is offering 20 scholarships totaling $30,000.

The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to alter the number of scholarships.

ELIGIBILITY 

The applicant must:

  1. Be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant
  2. Be a resident of Yellowknife, N’dilo, Dettah, Rae-Edzo (Behchoko), or the Ingraham Trail.

Adults over 25 years of age must be members in good standing of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314.

CRITERIA

Applicants must:

  1. Submit an essay of not less than 300 words
  2. Have proof of acceptance at a Canadian University, accredited college, technical school or institute of technology
  3. Submit most recent transcripts
  4. Submit three current letters of reference.

Preference will be given to students who:

  1. Have a strong academic background
  2. Have carefully considered their career goals
  3. Are planning to major in a program that may help in the development of the NWT
  4. Attend post-secondary education immediately after high school
  5. Have attended school in the NWT

Priority consideration will be given to those students who meet eligibility requirements and are children of an active member in good standing of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314 or are an active member in good standing themselves.

    PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS

    The scholarships will be awarded in two installments. The first installment of $1000.00 will be distributed in the fall semester. First semester marks and proof of acceptance to the second semester must be submitted in order to receive the second installment of $1000.00. Please submit these as soon as possible. If marks and acceptance are not received by February 28, 2026, the recipient will forfeit his/her second installment.
