SCHOLARSHIPS
Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314 SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Yellowknife Elks Scholarship Program is a combination of three historical scholarship funds and a new program aimed at supporting those in trades education.
The historical funds include:
- The Smitty Muyres Memorial Fund for students attending a Canadian university or accredited college.
- The Marion Slaven Scholarship for students pursuing careers in nursing or the medical profession.
- The Hettrick Aviation Scholarship for students pursuing careers in the aviation profession.
PROGRAM SCOPE
This scholarship program is designed to encourage and support students with strong scholastic backgrounds and leadership qualities who are going to attend, or are currently attending, a Canadian university, accredited college, technical school, institute of technology, accredited trades program or accredited flight school.
Annually, up to 15 scholarships are available to those students enrolled in university or college programs. An additional 15 scholarships are available to those students enrolled in trades programs.
A successful student will receive a scholarship award of up to $2000.00 for a full academic year. Students in shorter programs will receive proportionately less.
No more than four scholarships will be awarded to an individual.
The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to alter the number of scholarships granted.
ELIGIBILITY
The applicant must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant
- Be a resident of Yellowknife, N’dilo, Dettah, Rae-Edzo (Behchoko), or the Ingraham Trail.
Adults over 25 years of age must be members in good standing of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314.
CRITERIA
Applicants must include with their application:
- An essay, of not less than 300 words on:
- plans for their further education
- future career or profession goals
- extra-curricular activities and interests
- leadership experiences, community, and school involvement
- proof of acceptance at a Canadian university, accredited college, technical school, institute of technology, or an accredited trades program.
- most recent transcripts.
- three dated letters of reference that are no more than a year old.
Preference will be given to students who:
- have a strong academic background.
- have carefully considered their career goals.
- are planning to major in a program which may help in the development of the Northwest Territories.
- attend post-secondary education immediately after high school.
- have attended school in the NWT.
Some extra consideration will be given to those students who meet eligibility requirements and are:
- dependent children (natural or adopted) of an active member in good standing of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314; or
- an active member in good standing of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314.
PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Students attending a full year program, will have their scholarship paid in two installments. The second installment will be conditional on proof of successful completion of their first semester.
Students attending shorter programs, will be paid their full amount upon approval of the scholarship.
